Custom Sapele Wood Frame
The frame was the hardest thing I have ever made, and it was always meant to belong to the painting. Its pointed arch, trefoil tracery, and fluted pillars began as ballpoint sketches in a notebook and grew into precise drawings. As an amateur woodworker, I cut every curve with a template and jigsaw and routed every profile by hand, learning new techniques with each trip to the woodworking store.
The painting draws on numerous sources of inspiration, Alphonse Mucha, Lady Justice, Melania from Elden Ring, cathedral architecture, and the sounds of Metallica. The spark was the blueprint book from the Harry Potter films, which treats a fantasy object as something that can be measured and made. It took a year to complete and is my largest oil painting to date.
Phill’s enthusiasm as an artist is fueled by his love for the complex aspects of urban environments.
Placing the importance of expression at the forefront of each piece, he is guided by the desire to create authentic experiences of place. He challenges the connotations of place and argues that is more than a synonym for location, offering instead that it is a unique ensemble of nature and culture.
