Get to Know the Artist:
Stephen Pruitt has been working in the arts as a photographer, designer, writer, director and performer for over thirty years. After getting his first camera as a teenager, he continued with photography as a hobby while studying engineering at the University of Cincinnati, and took up theater design when a small dance companies approached him about doing their performance lighting after seeing his photographs.
Based in Austin, TX since 1997, Stephen collaborates as a designer with numerous organizations and artists including Forklift Danceworks, Tapestry Dance Company, Kathy Dunn Hamrick Dance, A’lante Flamenco, Andrea Ariel Dance Theatre, the Rude Mechs, Conspirare, and tours nationally as the technical director for Theatre Heroes presenting live performance for youth. As a photographer his work has been seen in group shows nationwide as well as magazines and travel brochures highlighting places as diverse as cemeteries in Croatia, carnivals in Latvia, former soviet statues and the Chernobyl exclusion zone in Russia and Ukraine, rainforests in Costa Rica, Mayan ruins in Mexico, and of course, an innumerable number of US state and national parks. His photographs have been presented in two solo shows: A Cartography of Solitude at Prizer Arts and Letters in Austin in Spring of 2021 and Forces of Nature at the Ray Drew Gallery in Las Vegas, NM in the Fall of 2023.
