Nature and the environment have always spoken to me. Using oil paint on canvas, I seek to convey the sense of open space, big sky, and flowing water which I have come to love in each of the places I have lived. From the golden rolling hills of California to the subtle beauty of the Texas Hill Country, I have studied and reimagined landscapes throughout my career as a practicing painter. Vibrant colors and bold compositions are my chosen visual language. Not completely abstract, yet not truly realistic either, my paintings are interpretations of actual views I have encountered and to which I feel a deep connection. I hope that viewers recognize the subject, but also see it in new, unexpected ways in each of my paintings, taking with them new insights about the beauty of the world in which we live.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0584/8707/9001/files/Elizabeth_Compton_PedernalesFallsInAutumn_1_-_Elizabeth_Smith.jpg?v=1770917893
tejana-is-texas-by-rachel-noffke
Tejana is Texas by Rachel Noffke

Tejana is Texas
Rachel Noffke
Acrylic on canvas
20”h x 24"w x 1.5"d
2026

In this piece, I enjoyed using the papel picados theme to create a celebratory color palette. My abstract pieces tend to contain bold colors, patterns, and repeating shapes or objects, as I like to experiment with how those objects and colors react with each other and whether that reaction causes the viewer to stay longer with the painting. In both types of paintings, I enjoy referring to a color, pattern, or shape (or even historical event or memory) that I think most people would recognize or have a connection to and then incorporating that connection and feeling into the painting. I also like to substitute 2-dimensional objects or patterns for 3-dimensional parts of the painting especially when that substitution creates a common reference. My inspiration is usually based on a color palette or pattern that I have an emotional reaction to. By design or happenstance, those colors or images relate to a memory or idea or feeling and if possible I will incorporate that memory into the painting.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0584/8707/9001/files/Rachel_Noffke_Tejana_is_Texas_1_-_Rachel_Noffke.jpg?v=1770920149
